Tomorrow I go back to school, and since I’m planning to retire at the end of this school year, I’ll be going back for the last time. Let’s see. I’ll be sixty-five on March 15. I’ve been either a teacher or a student since I was five, so that makes sixty first days. The anticipation and excitement have changed in some ways, but in many ways they haven’t changed at all. What will the kids be like? How about the teachers? What will I wear? And this year, will it be strange knowing that it’s my last year?
I think about the tousands of students that have come in and out of my life. I wonder how many of them ever think of me when they remember their years in school. If they do I hope their memories are good. I hope that I had a positive impact on their lives.
